The year 1870 is traditionally regarded as Victorian football’s first premiership year.

The Surrey Football Club is existent. It is a Richmond based club named after the Surrey Hotel in Lennox Street.
April 30
South Yarra decides to inaugurate a new challenge cup competition for the senior clubs.
___ Games are now to be played in two fifty minute halves. Teams no longer have to wait until one of them scores before changing ends.
May
Surrey holds its annual meeting. Tilley is president, McCutchan is secretary and Blair is treasurer. McCutchan, Parker, Tom Kendall and Tout comprise the club’s match committee.
May 7
Surrey opens the season with a scratch match between teams selected by its president and its treasurer.
May 21
Surrey is scheduled to play Carlton’s 2nds in Richmond Paddock (Yarra Park).
June 4
Surrey is scheduled to play Collingwood in Richmond Paddock (Yarra Park).
