The second Richmond Football Club is founded largely by members of the Surrey Football Club.
It will play as a junior club and will establish a home ground on the northern boundary of Yarra Park alongside Wellington Parade.
E. Tilley will captain Richmond during its first season. Fred Hyde will vice captain the club.

The second Richmond plays its first game. It is defeated by Southern three goals to one at Fawkner Park.

Richmond (18 players) holds the senior club Carlton (13 players) to a scoreless draw.
A Richmond representative secures the ground, the second best in Richmond Paddock (Yarra Park), from other clubs by positioning himself there from daybreak. (Leader 22/7/1871)
Richmond larrikins obstruct play during the second half and force the game to be held up. When play recommences one or two Carlton players are tripped by larrikins as they chase the ball amongst the spectators. Carlton then refuses to continue and the game ends.

Richmond’s game against Albert Park’s second twenty is postponed owing to an athletic sports meeting on the South Melbourne Cricket Ground.
