BIOGRAPHY
Barry was a ruck-rover. He played all his junior football with Thorpdale before crossing to Moe and had an outstanding country career winning three Competition and five club Best and Fairest awards. Richmond originally tried to recruit him during the early 1970s, but were unsuccessful because he was playing in Hawthorn’s country zone. He eventually joined Hawthorn in 1975 and spent a total of four seasons there. He took over as second rover to replace their terminally ill captain Peter Crimmins and went on to win their Best First Year Player award. Barry was a member of their 1976 day and 1977 night Premiership sides as well as playing five games for Victoria.
He joined Richmond in 1979 and played until 1986, playing very consistent football, even though Hawthorn considered he was finished as a senior player due to injury problems. He was a consistently high possession winner who was very creative when he did get the ball. He kept himself in great physical shape and was fearless in his desire to win the football. Due to his fitness, he was able to run all day and still appear fresh in the last quarter. He was a long left foot kick and a fine team man. Whilst at Richmond, he represented Victoria four times. His highest individual goal tally was 6 against Fitzroy in Round 5 of 1980.
He won Richmond’s Best and Fairest award in his first season, 1979, finished second in 1982 and was third in 1984. He was a member of the 1980 Premiership side and the 1982 Grand Final side. He captained the side in 1983 and 1984. After retiring, as a player, he worked at Richmond in the junior development area, promotions and as a specialist coach. He was awarded Life Membership in 1988. In 1991, he crossed to Collingwood in an administrative capacity and in 1992 he played for the Collingwood Seconds, when they were short of players. In 1994 and 1995 Barry coached the Hawthorn Reserves.
