BIOGRAPHY
William was a pacy wingman who came from Kyabram. His only senior game for Richmond was in the club’s first VFL Premiership side, in 1920 and his only goal helped seal the win late in the last quarter.
He returned to Kyabram the following year, and continued to play for them until 1924.
His football career ended prematurely in January of 1925, not in the post season of 1920 as commonly thought.
James and his mate, Chemist Despard Llewellyn Nuttall were returning from a shooting expedition that day when Nuttall made a potentially fatal mistake. "Mr. Nuttall placed a gun on the other side of a fence and climbed through it. He stepped on the hammer of the trigger as he was getting through, and Mr. James, who was about 6ft. distant, received practically the full discharge in his foot."
James, then 24, was later taken to Mooroopna Hospital where he remained for more than three months.
He was later appointed secretary of Kyabram from 1926-1928.
