BIOGRAPHY
William “Bomber” Wells was a versatile player who played as a centre-half-back and ruckman. Tough, balding and built like a tank, he was recruited from Burnley and spent a total of five seasons with Richmond. He then played with Williamstown and North Melbourne before serving in the A.I.F during the Second World War. Whilst on active service, he sustained serious injuries which resulted in him being forced to spend time in a full body cast. Once recovered, he returned to play senior football at St.Kilda, Port Melbourne and Williamstown. He was a member of Williamstown’s 1949 Premiership side before moving to Maryborough, then Redan. He became a very successful full-forward in the country, winning the Ballarat League Goalkicking award three times, once for Maryborough and twice with Redan. This included 116 goals for Redan in 1953, with his highest individual tally being 13 against Daylesford. Away from football, he was a fine lawn bowler who won Corowa’s Champion award in 1980.
