BIOGRAPHY
Chris Newman played originally at Beaconsfield and moved to Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup. Chris was drafted by Richmond with pick 55 overall in the 2000 AFL National Draft. Chris was hampered by some persistent injuries which stopped him playing at his best, preventing him playing a senior game in 2001 and instead playing in Richmond’s VFL Affiliate , Coburg . Chris played well with Coburg in the early part of the 2002 season eventually being called up to play his first senior game with the Tigers in Round 9 ,2002 against St Kilda. Chris played 13 games in 2002 and was gradually building his position as an attacking half back. Chris’s career started to bloom in 2003 playing 22 senior games of solid football in a poorly performing team, finishing 7th in the club Best and Fairest. Chris now an established senior player , played 19 games in 2004 and 22 games in 2005 finishing 6th in the club Best and Fairest in 2005 and also being selected in the International Rules Team to play Ireland. Chris played the first 13 games of 2006 but suffered a serious injury when in a contest with Leon Davis of Collingwood he broke his leg in two places. This was considered a similar break to fellow teammate Nathan Brown in 2005. Chris made a successful recovery from his broken leg and resumed with the senior team in Round 1, 2007. Chris played every game in 2007 and played a great style of running ,
attacking football from the back line which was highlighted in Round 11 against Fremantle when he kicked ‘ a long bomb” from the centre of the ground for a goal. The goal was considered for nomination as one of the “ Tiger Treasures of the century during Richmond’s centenary celebrations in 2008. Chris was now an established player with strong leadership qualities and in 2008 he and Nathan Foley were named as Deputy Vice Captains. Through 2008 Chris was again a dominant player winning the Tigers
Most Courageous Player award and finishing 4th in the club Best and Fairest. At the end of 2008 Chris was named the Captain of the Richmond Football club. Chris captained Richmond from 2009 to 2012 at which time he decided to step down. Through this time Chris’s form was at a consistently high level and he finished 4th (2008), 3rd (2009)and 2nd (2010) in the club Best and Fairest.
Trent Cotchin became captain in 2013 and Chris continued to play consistently through 2013, 2014 and 2015 where in each of those years he experienced finals action , unfortunately on the losing end of three successive Elimination Final losses.
Chris retired at the end of 2015 after a wonderful career of 268 games , one of the Tigers finest players and leaders.
