David played as a centre-half-forward and ruckman after being recruited from Bordertown. He was a fine player who moved well and could kick with both feet. He was a member of the 1934 Premiership side. A back injury forced him to retire in 1937. He was later a committee man at the Apsley Football Club. He worked as a baker and died in 1979. He was a brother-in-law of former Richmond Champion Leo Merrett. His son, David Junior, played with Richmond’s Seconds and Thirds in 1972 and 1973. David Junior was a member of the 1973 Under/19 Premiership side.
