BIOGRAPHY
The Next Generation Academy product didn’t get out of the starter’s blocks in his first season (2017) on the rookie list because of a stress reaction in a shin that turned into a fracture.
He played in the practice match AFLX game of 2017, then in the club's first official AFLX game against GWS.
Missed nearly all of the pre-season and didn’t play in the VFL until the Qualifying Final of 2018. He then played in the losing semi final the following week.
A left-footer, he debuted in the club's 92 point win over Gold Coast in Rd 16 2019.
Derek Eggmolesse-Smith originally from Wentworth , NSW ( eligible for GWS Academy ) moved to Mildura and in 2016 became eligible for Richmond’s newly established Next Generation Academy for young indigenous and multicultural players from the Sunraysia region of northwestern Victoria. Derek in 2016 was a star player with Wentworth winning the Sunrayasia Football League Rising Star and Best and Fairest player awards .
Derek was overlooked in the 2016 AFL National Draft ( including by Richmond ) but was contracted in the 2018 AFL Rookie Draft by Richmond as a category “B” Rookie ( 27/11/2017 ).
Derek was re-contracted for 2019 and was elevated to the Club’s primary list in place of the long term injury listed Alex Rance .
After consistent performances in the Tigers VFL team Derek made his senior debut for the Tigers in Round 16 , 2019 against Gold Coast at Metricom Stadium. In Round 17 against GWS he was one of 5 indigenous players in the Tigers senior team that day , a record for the club. Derek was dropped back to the VFL team and played in the Tigers VFL 2019 Premiership team.
Derek was delisted at the end of the 2020 season but re-contracted ahead of the 2021 season after training with the team over summer. Derek has been unable to secure a regular place in the Tigers senior team and he was delisted by Richmond at the end of the 2021 season.
