BIOGRAPHY
Cyril was a centreman, half-forward, half-back and ruck-rover. He was also known as, “Dooley” and was a very capable player who was recruited from VFA club Brighton. He only spent four seasons with Richmond, captaining the side in his last season, 1929. He was a member of the 1927, 1928 and 1929 Grand Final sides and he represented both the VFA and Victoria twice. He was an outstanding all-round sportsman and one of the few students at Wesley College to earn the Triple Colour Badge for Football, Cricket and Rowing. He also played in the Victorian Junior tennis final three years in a row, as well as playing Sub District Cricket with the Elsternwick Club. In 1948, he was the Australian Lawn Bowls fours champion. He later moved to Queensland, where he became a state football selector in the early 1950’s. He died in 1985. His grandson, Keith Battersby, played in Oakleigh’s last VFA Premiership team in 1988.
