Emmett was a versatile big man who played in the back-pocket, forward-pocket and ruck. He joined Richmond’s Under/19 team in 1972; however, it took him several seasons to gain a regular position in the senior team after an outstanding junior career. He won the Under/19s Best and Fairest in 1972 and 1973 as well as captaining the Premiership side in 1973. His 4 goals during that Grand Final earned him the vote for best on the ground. He later developed into a strong marking defender who represented Victoria once. He is one of only nine players to have played in VFL Premiership sides in the Seniors, Reserves and Under/19 Grades. He was a member of the 1977 Reserves’ and the 1980 Senior’s Premiership sides as well as the 1982 Grand Final side. He was awarded Life Membership in 1989. After leaving Richmond, he spent three years at Footscray, including one as playing-coach of their reserves. He then crossed to Springvale in 1987 and was a member of their Premiership side.
He coached the Richmond Reserves between 1988 and 1991, as well as being the club’s ruck coach in 1992 and 1995. A Senior Sergeant in the Victoria Police Force, he is a committee member of Richmond’s Former Players’ and Officials’ Association. In 1996 he was appointed to the AFL Tribunal.
