BIOGRAPHY
Ian was a wingman, half-forward and back-pocket. He was a courageous, persistent player and a fine kick. In 1966, whilst playing with Spotswood, he won the Under/14 Competition Best and Fairest in the Footscray District League polling three votes in all but one game, where he polled two votes. He joined the Richmond Fourths in 1968 and worked his way through to the seniors in 1970. He made his debut as a reserve against Essendon in Round 21 of 1970 before gaining selection for the last game against Footscray. In 1971 he was selected as a reserve three times. He was a member of the Under/19’s Premiership sides in 1968 and 1969. On Grand Final day 1968 Ian was very active after playing in the Under/19 Premiership side, he then fronted up for the final of the Sunkick, where he finished second.
He was unfortunate to miss a berth in the 1971 Reserves’ Premiership side, due to injury; however, he went on to win the Best and Fairest award. After leaving Richmond, he played with Waverley before moving to Emerald. Away from football Ian held a Law Degree. He died from a heart condition in his early-thirties. Emerald Football Club have dedicated the Best Team Man Trophy for their Thirds in his honour.
