BIOGRAPHY
Jay Schulz attended Concordia College in South Australia, played school football as well as playing with the Central Yorke Cougars. Jay moved to Woodville-West Torrens and played with the South Australian U/18 representative team in the National Championships . As a 17 year old , Jay played for the Australian U/17 team against Ireland in the International Rules Series , winning the Ron Barassi medal as best player for Australia in the series . Jay, a key forward was drafted by Richmond with pick 12 in the 2002 AFL National Draft making his senior debut with Richmond in Round 7 , 2003 against Essendon playing 5 senior games for the year . Jay played 16 senior games in 2004 with a 6 goal game against Brisbane Lions in Round 14, that earnt him a Rising Star nomination . Before the start of the 2005 season Jay was charged with drunk driving and speeding, which resulted in Richmond’s major sponsor the Transport Accident Commission withdrawing its sponsorship of the club.

Jay also broke his ankle in the 2005 Wizard Cup (AFL Pre-season competition) against Collingwood and again in the 2005 home and away games . Jay played 4 senior games in 2005 . In 2006 Jay was again injured hurting his shoulder after playing the first 2 senior games of the season , and did not return to the senior team until Round 13 and played the rest of the season . Jay played 2007 ( 12 games) , 2008 ( 18 games) and 2009 ( 4 games ) with Richmond . Port Adelaide was showing interest in Jay at the end of the 2007 season , but a satisfactory trade for Richmond could not be organized. Jay experienced his best season with Richmond in 2008 playing mainly at centre half back . At the end of 2009 Jay was traded by Richmond to Port Adelaide in exchange for Mitch Farmer and Port Adelaide’s pick 71 in the 2009 AFL National Draft . Richmond used pick 71 to draft Ben Nason in the 2009 AFL National Draft.
