BIOGRAPHY
Justin was a wingman. He was a creative player who finished off his work with accurate foot passes. He had to overcome a serious back injury which restricted his progress during the early part of his career. Recruited from Glen Waverley Hawks, he was a member of the Under/19’s 1985 Premiership team. Justin spent three seasons with the Under/19’s and two with the Reserves before he made his senior debut, in 1988. His debut season, 1988, was outstanding. He capped it off by winning the VFL Recruit of the Year, Richmond’s Best First Year Player award as well as finishing third in the Best and Fairest award. He also ran second in the 1991 Reserves, Best and Fairest award. His highest individual goal tally was 5 against Brisbane in Round 11 and Fitzroy in Round 22 of 1988.
A lack of form saw him drafted to Footscray in 1991, but he left after playing one season with their reserves. He then spent two seasons with Seymour and in 1995 he played with Frankston. Justin is the younger brother of Michael Pickering. Another brother, Andrew, played in Richmond’s 1989 Under/19 Premiership side.
