BIOGRAPHY
Mark Chaffey was almost lost to baseball, having received a scholarship to Alabama. However after one year he returned to Australia and was selected by Richmond in the 1996 draft at pick 35.
Mark was a tough nuggety backman, who initially was tried as a forward. "The first two or three seasons I was in and out of the side and just struggled with consistency a little bit, and then a new set of coaches came." (The Age Aug 16 2002)
Mark debuted in Round Four 1997 against the Fremantle Dockers in a winning effort, where he picked up ten touches. He finished his debut season with 12 games, (all wearing the number 40). For the remainder of his career he would wear the Number 6.
In 2001, he played in all 25 games of the season including a finals victory against Carlton. Despite losing in the 2001 Preliminary Final, Mark was one of the Tigers that could hold his head up high, racking up 25 touches in defeat.
Mark was known for being a tough small defender who could rotate through the middle and played 166 games. Prior to playing the last game of 2006 (a loss to WCE by 88pts), he and Greg Stafford announced their retirement.
