BIOGRAPHY
One of the most incredible selection debuts in Richmond history - Pickett was named in Richmond's 2019 Grand Final team against GWS. He became the first player to debut in a Grand Final since Keith Batchelor (Collingwood) in 1952, and with the Tigers victory joined Bill James (1920) as the only Tiger player to ever debut in a premiership match.
A week earlier, he had won the Norm Goss Memorial Medal for best on ground in Richmond's Reserves premiership win.
On Grand Final day against GWS, he kicked a goal (which was passed to him by Dustin Martin) and performed exceptionally well including a memorable blind turn in the middle of the ground. He finished in third place in the Norm Smith Medal voting.
As a result of playing in a premiership, Pickett automatically became a life member of the club.
Marlion Pickett was the “ feel good “ story of 2019 after he played in a Premiership with the Tigers senior team in his AFL debut. How did this happen ? Marlion was drafted by Richmond from South Fremantle with selection 13 overall in the 2019 AFL Mid Season Draft in late May.
Marlion was 27 years of age , married to wife Jess , with four children Marlion had also sustained a re-occurrence of a significant finger injury that would keep him from playing for several weeks . In the first weekend of August 2019 Marlion commenced playing with The Tigers VFL team. Marlion quickly established his player credentials eventually playing in the Tigers VFL 2019 Premiership team , winning the Norm Goss Medal awarded to the best player in the Grand Final. What a fairytale !
Meanwhile on the same weekend that the Tigers won the VFL Premiership the Tigers senior team had defeated Geelong in a
Preliminary final and would now play GWS in the Grand Final a week later. The question asked during the week by all Tiger supporters was ‘ is the fairytale really over or would senior coach Damien Hardwick pick Marlion in the senior team for the Grand Final ‘ .
Marlion was voted one of the Tigers best players in the Premiership win over the Giants. Marlion became a regular senior player in the 2020 season which was interrupted by the Covid19 pandemic. The Tigers senior team were again a force in the finals of 2020 and defeated Geelong in the Grand Final winning their second successive Premiership and Marlion was a two time Tiger Premiership player. Marlion described his unbelievable rise to stardom and popularity from a troubled childhood , turbulent teenage years and brushes with the law in his book written with David Warner ‘ BELIEF ‘ first published in November 2020.
