BIOGRAPHY
Matthew Manfield was originally from Woodville West Torrens and
drafted by Fitzroy with pick 24 overall in the 1994 AFL National
Draft . Matthew played 1 senior game in 1995 and 4 senior games in
1996 with Fitzroy .
At the end of the 1996 season Fitzroy ceased operations as an AFL
Club playing their final game against Fremantle on Sunday
1/09/1996 at Subiaco Oval and the week before played their last
game in Melbourne at the MCG against Richmond on Sunday
25/08/1996. Fitzroy merged with the Brisbane Bears at the end of
1996 becoming the Brisbane Lions.
As a result of these events Matthew re-entered the Draft and
Richmond drafted him with pick 41 overall in the 1996 AFL National
Draft . Matthew made his debut with the Richmond senior team in
Round 1, 1997 against Geelong. Matthew played 6 games with
Richmond in 1997-1998 . Matthew was delisted by Richmond at the
end of the 1998 season. After a season at Collingwood without
playing a senior game Matthew returned home to Adelaide and
played at Glenelg. While playing at Glenelg Matthew was diagnosed
in 2003 with Testicular Cancer . Matthew successfully went through
surgery and radiotherapy
