BIOGRAPHY
“Max” was a centre-half-back who was originally rejected by Collingwood and Melbourne, before arriving at Richmond. He actually quit football for two years and it was only that a friend recognised his talent and took him to Richmond, to ensure that he was not lost to the game forever. He developed into one of the best centre-half-backs of his era, he was a fine mark, had great anticipation and was fearless, but fair, in his efforts to win the ball. Max was vice captain and the club’s best player in the 1920 and 1921 Premiership sides.
