BIOGRAPHY
Ruben or “Chum” was a centre-half-back who was recruited from Tasmanian club Latrobe. His career at Richmond was interrupted due to a broken leg. Ruben crossed to Brunswick during the 1926 season and remained there until the end of 1928. After that, he played and coached the Tramways team and worked as a tram driver whilst in Melbourne.
Whilst playing with Latrobe, he was coached by future dual “Brownlow Medallist” Ivor Warne- Smith. When Ruben was recruited by Richmond, he alerted the club to the talents of his former mentor. Richmond actually approached and signed Warne-Smith, who moved to Melbourne but unfortunately he lived within the Melbourne Football Club’s residential boundaries. They were able to claim Warne-Smith as their player and Richmond were left to wonder what may have been.
