BIOGRAPHY
Richard Tambling played football originally in Southern Districts Northern Territory ( NT ). He played with the NT U/18
Representative team in the 2004 National Championships , winning the Harrison Medal for the Best player in the Division 2
Championships.
Richard was drafted by Richmond with pick 4 overall in the 2004 AFL National Draft. The 2004 Draft was considered very strong in the top 10 picks and Richard was immediately under the pressure of high expectations with Richmond having had the opportunity to recruit Lance Franklin prior to Richard. Before the 2004 Draft Richard had for some time been considered a dominant player in the NT with his explosive speed and ability to read the play, and he confirmed that status in 2004. Terry Wallace ( Coach of Richmond ) was impressed saying Richard and Brett Delidio ( Richmond pick 1 overall in 2004 Draft ) were the “best two kids in the country”. Richard made his debut with the Tigers senior team in Round 1, 2005 against Port Adelaide and had modest returns in the 12 games he played that season.
From 2006 to 2009 Richard as a midfielder played a total of 83 senior games out of a possible 88 games . His form was generally
solid with a small number of outstanding games although he finished 4th in the club Best and Fairest in 2009, his best year which saw him with 19 disposals on more than 15 occasions . Richard buoyed by his 2009 year , received a setback when he developed compartment syndrome which required surgery and impacted on his 2010 season where he was restricted to 11 games. Richard requested to leave Richmond at the end of 2010 because of his discomfit at the club and his desire to move away from Victoria. Richard played 108 games over 6 years with the Tigers in a losing era and suffered through the naturally high expectations of the Tiger fans. Richard was traded to Adelaide in exchange for Adelaide’s pick 51 in the AFL 2010 National Draft and Adelaide’s compensation pick for Nathan Bock’s selection by the Gold Coast . Richmond used pick 51 to draft Dean McDonald in the 2010 AFL National Draft. The Nathan Bock compensation pick was a selection at the end of the first round of any one of the next five AFL National Draft’s including 2010. Richmond drafted Todd Elton in the AFL 2011 Draft with this pick which turned out to be pick 26 .
