BIOGRAPHY
“Ricky” was a strongly built full-forward who was recruited from Carlton. In his seven seasons with the Blues he was restricted to just 19 games mainly due to injuries and 30 matches lost through suspensions. He then crossed to Richmond in 1972 where he formed a strong and feared combination with Neil Balme. He was an accurate left foot kick, used his strength to advantage in marking contests and was a great protector of his smaller teammates. His highest individual goal tally was 8 against St.Kilda in Round 17 of 1972 and he kicked 5 goals or more eight times. He was a member of the 1972 grand final team; however, a hamstring injury forced him from the ground at half-time. He played well in the replay of the drawn semi-final finishing that game with 5 goals. He was the club’s equal top Goalkicker in 1972 with 55.
He played with Tasmanian club Burnie in between stints with Richmond. His VFL career ended in Round 20 of 1976 after a game against South Melbourne Reserves when he was reported seven times and received a 16-match suspension. He then coached Ascot Vale and Sunshine before playing briefly with Werribee. His last involvement in football was as the coach of the Riddell District League’s Representative side. He now works for a shower screen company and lives in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. His son played in the Victorian State Under/18 Competition in 1992. Ricky’s father Rod played 119 games for Carlton between 1935 and 1946 and he was a member of their 1938 and 1945 Premiership sides.
