BIOGRAPHY
Robert started his career as a forward, but finished up as a centre-half-back. Easily recognised by his tattooed arms, he originally worked his way through the lower grades with Footscray, before spending four seasons with their senior team. Richmond picked up a bargain when he was dropped from the Footscray list at the end of the 1972 season. His rugged, straight-ahead play was well suited to the attacking Richmond defence, where he established himself as a regular senior player during his five seasons with the club. During his senior career he was suspended for a total of 28 matches, after nine visits to the tribunal.
Robbie had a good turn of speed which allowed him to run out of the back line and kick deep into the forward line. He was a close-checking defender who was a long left foot kick and very athletic for his height. He was a member of Premiership sides with the Seniors in 1973 and 1974 and the Reserves in 1977. During the 1978 season he crossed to Brunswick, before returning to Footscray in 1979. He then spent a season and a half with South Melbourne before joining West Footscray. He coached that team for three seasons winning one Premiership. He later coached St Albans for three seasons winning two Premierships. An upholsterer, Robbie is now a skills coach with Footscray and still lives in the Western Suburbs. One brother, Joe, played 11 games for Footscray in 1966 and 1967 and his brothers, twins, Warren and Steven also played with VFA side Brunswick.
