BIOGRAPHY
Russell was a wingman. He joined the Richmond Thirds in 1967 and was a member of their Premiership side that year. He also won the Under/19's Best and Fairest award in 1967. He was a very talented player who was showing some fine form before being struck down with a serious knee injury during his only senior game against Carlton at Princes' Park. Ironically his debut was in Round 13 of 1968. He never played for Richmond again and struggled to play football at all after that. He was the ideal size for the wing as Richmond had adopted the policy of playing 6 foot plus wingmen. Russell was also an opening bowler for Oakleigh in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket competition for several seasons. He now lives in Queensland and runs a successful snow hire business.
