BIOGRAPHY
Sam was a strongly-built wingman and half-back flanker who was a good kick and regarded as one of the superb high markers in the Gippsland League. Occassionally nicknamed 'Big Sam'
Recruited from Maffra he came to the club in early 1925, gaining a clearance in April, and played in pre-season practice matches. He debuted for Richmond as a 20 year old in Rd 3 1925 against Fitzroy. He played three games with Richmond but owing to an injured leg (knee injury) (thigh injury) he sustained in a Richmond match against Ararat in July, did not play again for the club. He returned to Maffra in early 1926, and played in several Grand Final and a premiership, and in 1929 there were reports that Richmond were seeking him to return to help out as a follower.
That didn't eventually and he saw out his career at Maffra before a recurrence of his knee injury forced his retirement.
Richmond had two other players from Maffra play at this stage - Jim Maxfield and Reserves captain Jim Doran. Barrett did not play any Reserve games for Richmond.
