BIOGRAPHY
Stephen was a solidly built, skilful wingman and ruck-rover who had a good turn of speed. He was a member of the Under/19’s 1973 Premiership side; however, his career with Richmond was unfortunately tarnished after he was involved in the infamous half-time brawl at Windy Hill in 1974. At that time, he was 17 and had only just made the senior team. After the brawl he was charged with assault and also suspended and also suspended for four matches by the VFL tribunal.
He later played senior football in South Australia, Tasmania, and the VFA. He had coaching success, at senior level, winning two Premierships, one in Tasmania and the other in the VFA with Brunswick. He also won the 1982 “Wander Medal” as Competition Best and Fairest in the North West Football Union, in Tasmania. He is now involved in a car dealership. Stephen is the brother-in-law of former Richmond and St.Kilda player Dean Herbert.
