BIOGRAPHY
Stephen was a half-forward-flanker who played some very consistent football in his short stay at Richmond. He had a good turn of speed, was very elusive and possessed plenty of courage. He was also very creative with his intelligent use of handball. He originally started his league career with St.Kilda where he played between 1968 and 1973. In 1969, he represented the VFL Reserves against New South Wales. He crossed to Richmond during the 1973 season and was a member of the 1973 Premiership side. He then suffered a serious knee injury during a mid-season game against Hawthorn, in 1974 and as a result didn’t play football for several years. During his lay-off, he took up umpiring and later umpired in the VFL Under/19 Competition during the 1976 and 1977 seasons.
Stephen attempted a comeback with Richmond, in 1978; however, he only managed a couple of reserves’ games. He then crossed to Prahran for the remainder of that season and was a member of their Premiership side. He continued playing with Cheltenham and then Morwell before coaching the Sydney Swans Thirds for one year, in 1983. He then worked as a VFL Development Officer for three years, before taking over as a coach of Cobden. Stephen’s last major football role was to address the West Coast Eagles prior to a Grand Final at the request of his former teammate Michael Malthouse. Stephen now works as a piano tuner and lives in Brunswick.
