BIOGRAPHY
George captained Richmond in 1894 and for part of 1895 at which point he resigned the captaincy after the sixth game of the season. A captain of the team would often line up at centre half back, to be able to view down the ground. It is suggested that George wished to be unrestricted in position on the field, and hence resigned the captaincy.
The following week he kicked 2 goals but injury prevented him from playing the rest of the season.
In April 1896 he sought a clearance, but decided to remain at the club. The next month, Sparrow kicked the wining goal against StKilda moments before the bell. In a game against Carlton, he was 'fish-poisoned' and had to retire from the field.
Later in the year, he and Jimmy Parker the attention of the committee to, and deny “certain rumours” about them. The committee assure the players are playing with integrity.
